A lot of times, we see people, read about them, or follow them on twitter.
She's that girl who has been dating her boyfriend since she was 19. They dated for 4 years, and now at 23 she's married with kids or engaged, and you are neon green with envy.
He's that brother with a 6 figure paying job at Goldman Sachs. He's tall and handsome. You follow him on twitter, and all the twitter chics seem to love him cos he's got a way with the ladies and you really wish you had his life.
She's middle aged like you are, has a high profile paying job - at least, that's what it sounds like from her blog- she has an amazing collection of shoes (you've seen them on facebook) and she only rocks designers. You think to yourself, can you swap lives.
Too many times, we see people's lives for wha it is on the outside, and all we see is the "perfect" side, the part people want us to see. We do not see their pain, their hurt, their insecurities, because it takes a special person to write/blog/facebook/tweet about their shortcomings.
The "lucky" girl who's married at 23 doesnt tell you about her over-bearing inlaws, or how her husband hits her, or how she secretly wishes that she had pursued her dream. That young dashing twitter ladies' man doesnt tell you about how he gets no play in the real world and as such is overcompensating on twitter. The go-getter business savvy designer wearing chic wont tell you about how much she desperately wishes her personal life was more balanced.
If I have a penny for every time I see a comment about how people wish they have someone else's life, I'd pay off all my student loans!.

yeah but have you ever thought that maybe that 23 year old's husband treats her right and is wonderful to her kids?
its a two way thing.maybe she does have it good just like people think.
cool post.
Nice. Most people do front about their lives while the ones who are actually rarely have enough time to spread the joy. Also, it does take a speacial person to share their insecurities because in a perfect world, we're all happy and unerstand everything that life throws in our paths. Many people on't have the guts to say "what the fuck?" (love it)
since nobody shouted first FIRRRRSSST
awesome post!
Like they say the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
so true....
Profound. Now i've gotta stop complaining, I LOVE MY LIFE. Nice post.
lol......
preach on cousin...
Very true...don't even get me started on people and their internet alter-egos.
we just have to learn how to enjoy where we are on the way to where we are going. it doesn't matter if others are having it all good or not.
it might be hard but it is possible.
I definately don't want to swap with anyone. I think our joys and our sorrows are individually tailored to us.
Funny,
I just wish my life were better, not wish to be in someone else's shoes........and I mean, who doesn't wish their lives were better?
Filling your post.
All that glitters aint gold.
*feeling your post....
Twitter is like HOLLYWOOD, all over again. Life is never perfect.
So when you see someone with 150,000,000 followers...don't envy! LOL.
I really love this post. I see it all the time on twitter.I love my life just the way it is,but as a human being, I am selfish and would always wish for more... it pushes me to be better.
p.s Tinu upon the notice you were given on twitter, you still werent first.. SMDH @ YOU!!
nice post. yes its only natural that people will only display things on twitter (or the internet in general) to paint themselves in the highest regard possible. actually i would rather people do this (in a non-annoying way) than to pessimists. i can't stand pessimists on the internet. like i don't even know you that well, why are you blowing my high?
it takes a special type of person to write about their shortcomings and fears. i've done a couple of introspection blog posts about some things that i feel i could work on in my life.
This is soo true. We shld be content with our own lives. Accept ourselves for who we are. i know i am guilty of waning to look like someone else or have their glamorous life. But truth be told even those we envy have bad azz problems. Like Biggie said, More money, more problemos....
I cld wish to be someone else, but wishes rnt horses, so i gats o get off my azz n WORK IT! (abi na work at it)
I'm signing out....
Hmmm....tell me about it! You may see the glory...but never know the story! We should be grateful for what we have and for who we are cuz others are praying to be in our shoes....great post!
We always want what we don't have but one would think that by now, people would have learnt differently.
You can never truly know a person through twitter or blogging. It only human to look at others and wish for such things in your own life. But like you said no one has the perfect life...no one us exempt from lifes ups and down
Nice one.
hehe, are you hinting that your life isn't as portrayed on twitter?
I totally see what you mean though: judging people's lives by the bits they choose to show is a recipe for disaster.
too true...
How you dey?
well said...we all should be thankful for us, rather than envy others...on the other hand though...not all those who seem like they have it all, don't have it all...
Deep.I guess that's why one has to learn the fine art of contentment with one's lot at an early age. On the other hand such apparently "perfect" lives do serve to spur on the rest of us Lower Mortals with normal lives. If perfection does not exist and is not attainable , then what else can we strive for?
True talk Bumight...some people just need to see beyond the gloss.
As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side. My life is good just the way it is and I am thankful
OMG! Did you read my mind?
Just yesterday i was thinking about how easy it is for people to blog/tweet their fantasies while living miserable lives.
And others out there buy into the fantasy.
Please love the life you're living and if you don't, then do something about it and stop looking up to what you do not fully know.
Oya Bumight i just cc'ed you in a post go and answer sharpish!
For everyone person whose life I wish I had, I like to believe there are two persons out there who wish they had my life!
There you are. A balanced equation.
true say.. though I ve to admit it aint easy... well nothing ever is easy is it?
Reading this post, One line off my favorite write up, DESIDERATA, Came to mind...
"...if you compare yourself with others you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourself..."
What's the whole point of comparing and wishing and what not? Everybody's got their own demons. You don't wanna wish their demons on yerself...Hence the saying(i think :D) "Careful what you wish for..."
On the other hand, there are people who only twit the imperfect parts of their lives (ME)! hehehe
Bums Bums...i miss u sha!
oya, update please
comparing my life to another is just a waste of time, energy and brain cells. i have my own race to run.
nice post.
how you good?
